Community Initiatives

When we collect data from our community members, we are very aware that the detailed health information and biological samples they choose to share with us are their most valuable resources.

Out of respect for their willingness to participate in our research, we invest 10% of our budget to small projects prioritised by the community as important to their health and quality of life

Flood response

The Lifuwu community along the edges of the Mpatsanjoka river were victims of the heavy flooding after Cyclone Freddy in March 2023. We assisted the 26 families made homeless in the flooding with plastic roof covering for their new homes, food, and a small amount of cash to replace household items.

Lifuwu Health Centre access road

The Lifuwu health centre is the primary government provider of health services in our community. During Cyclone Freddy in March 2023, the road to the health centre was badly damaged by water erosion, and vehicles can no longer reach the health centre. Nyanja provided equipment and supplies to fix the road, and is coordinating with the Salima District Council and the Lifuwu Community Committee to complete the road repairs.
